Concept Explanation

Plastic: A Boon

The word ‘plastic’ is derived from a Greek word ‘plastikos’ meaning capable of being shaped or moulded. Plastics are made from natural materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and crude oil through a polymerisation or polycondensation process.

We have become exceedingly dependent on plastics. It may be difficult to imagine our life without plastics.Important properties of plastics that made us to depend on it are :-

  • Plastics are very durable (long lasting).
  • We can give any shape or colour to Plastics.
  • It is less expensive as compared to metals.
  • Plastics have low permeability to water(i.e. they don't allow water to pass though easily). So, we can use it(plastic sheets) to cover the things in open areas.
  • Most of the things we use in our daily life are made up of plastic. Toothbrushes, toys, carry bags, buckets, water bottles, and many parts of computer monitors, etc., are all made up of plastic.
  • Plastics are used in a wide range of products from paper clips to spaceships due to their lightweight, relatively low cost and resistance to water and microorganisms.
